Taunton people are being asked to nominate unsung community heroes for a Citizenship Award
-
Mayor of Taunton, Terry Hall, is encouraging people all over Taunton to nominate unsung heroes
The Taunton Deane Citizenship Awards publicly acknowledge outstanding voluntary service in Taunton from inspirational local people.
In the past nominations have ranged from outstanding contributions to voluntary organisations, to those who have simply been 'good neighbours' in many different ways.
Mayor of Taunton Deane, Councillor Terry Hall, said: "I have seen at first hand through visits the Mayoress and myself I have made across the Borough, that there is a great deal of unsung and unpaid community work going on in our communities.
"There are some remarkable people in Taunton Deane who regularly give up their time to help others.
He added: "During the recent bad weather and subsequent flooding we have seen at first hand the true meaning of community spirit."
Last year's recipient included a church warden who volunteers at a local youth club and a long-standing parish councillor who devoted time to the Cub Scouts.
All nominees must live in Taunton Deane, cannot have been recognised in the past for their service and must not earn their nomination from service given through their trade or profession.
Both individuals and voluntary groups can be nominated.
Taunton Deane Council has asked that nominees should not be informed of their nomination at this stage.
The closing date for nominations this year is Friday 1 March 2013 and the awards will be presented in late April this year.
To nominate an inspirational community member, write to Sharon Grant, Civic Officer, Mayor's Parlour, The Deane House, Belvedere Road, Taunton, TA1 1HE.
