Feed the Birds Day

Taunton town centre has been busy with people starting the Christmas shopping early to spread the cost. For many of us here comes the age old problem of what to get for older relatives, who seem to have pretty much all they need.
I saw on the RSPB website about Feed the Birds Day on October 29th, their effort to get us all thinking about our feathered friends who suffered so much last winter, and could be in for another tough one. A great project for half term as well.
It made me think, most people enjoy seeing the birds come to their garden and its something you can do whether you have a large area or just a small yard, but bird food is another expense that perhaps some may forego. A great present would be some extra special bird treats which are easy to make yourself, the RSPB website has some recipes for fat balls etc.Sunflower seeds and dried berries are popular with many birds and can be purchased at pet food shops, healthfood stores and garden centres.
If they already have a bird feeder or bird table, what about an upgrade? If you have a relative who is less mobile than they used to be, you can get bird feeders that attach to the window, bringing them closer to see.
A lot of people forget the importance of bird baths, for drinking and bathing, the big freeze last winter made it tough for those not close too streams.
If your relatives have a garden or decent patio, this is the time of year for planting trees, what about a nice fruit tree or two or you could get them something in the way of garden furniture.
