Online becoming the popular place to book holidays

Travel insurer Hiscox has carried out research which has proven that when it comes to choosing our holidays, we prefer online research to relying on recommendations from friends and family. Nearly 60% of holidays are booked online* - either through tour operators such as Thomas Cook, directly with hotels or via travel aggregator sites. One in 20 of us are even looking for cheap holidays on our smartphones! Overall, many find booking online cheaper due to the many low cost holidays available. You can also read reviews and tailor any holiday arrangements to best suit your needs.
We still want our holidays!
Despite the gloomy economic outlook, the vast majority of people surveyed said that they still planned to take a holiday this summer. However, the recent push for austerity is reflected in some of the numbers. According to the survey, 18% of people said their holiday budget would stay the same as last year* whilst the same number of people said they would cut down on other expenses in order to be able to take a trip abroad.
Luxury all-inclusive breaks
One in ten holidaymakers surveyed said they planned to take a longer, more luxurious break this year. The popularity of cheap holidays to Mexico reflects this desire to experience something different. Once-in-a-lifetime, long haul destinations like Mexico deliver the perfect holiday package. You’ll find vibrant cities, sublime coastlines and luxury hotel resorts all at affordable prices.
All-inclusive holidays are also proving popular. These types of holiday allow you to enjoy your break in the knowledge that everything is already taken care of. Whether you’re looking for a far-flung luxury escape, a relaxing family break or a value for money holiday, all-inclusive packages allow you to enjoy your getaway knowing that most of your costs are already covered.
This research shows that holidaymakers are becoming increasingly aware of the many options open to them - with more than a third actively seeking the cheapest package holidays available online. Many of us are even willing to cut back in other areas so that we can still experience a summer holiday - whether that’s a stay at an all-inclusive luxury beach resort, a city mini-break or a pulse-racing activity holiday.
