Taunton's town centre's hopes of sparkling this Christmas have received a boost.
Taunton Deane Councillor campaigning for Christmas lights, Kelly Durdan
Kelly Durdan, Taunton Deane Councillor, has set up a group called 'Make Taunton Sparkle after hearing news that there were not enough funds for the usual town centre bunting.
Cllr Durdan has already received £5000 in donations and she has also received approval for an official lights switch on on Sunday November 18.
She says she needs to raise £20,000 overall and has admitted that this might be difficult given the current economic climate.
Those who want to be one of Kelly's "Taunton Sparklers" can donate through street collections, a PayPal account and via the Make Taunton Sparkle account at Lloyds TSB in Taunton.
Kelly has a strict deadline of the end of October to buy and install the lighting.
She is desperately in need of, groups and businesses to consider either donating cash or sponsoring a decorated tree.
Taunton Town Centre Manager Graham Love said: "We are working closely with Cllr Kelly Durdan and her team and appreciate her initiative to make Taunton sparkle.
"Thanks to her campaign the street fair will now be extended beyond 5pm and we will again take a moment to switch on the Christmas lights."
