Bogus callers posing as water company officials and gardening services companies have stolen nearly £2,000 in a number of incidents across the force area.
On September 2nd at 12.20pm, an elderly female was the victim of an incident in Greenway Road in Taunton. Unknown callers stated they were from a company dealing with a local water leak and wanted to check her taps. The victim said 'No' but the offenders entered anyway and stole a large quantity of cash. One of the offenders is described as a white male aged about 30 years old and of slim build. He was wearing cream coloured clothing and a white cap.
Police are also investigating a rogue trading incident in Church Road in Wembdon, Bridgwater, at about 2.30pm on August 31st. A cold caller offered to do some tree lopping and hedge trimming. He wanted £240 cash up front and took the cash but failed to return to do the work. He is described as a white male in his late thirties with fair hair.
Sgt Andy Owen from Avon and Somerset Police said: "These types of offences really are among some of the worst types that we see, targeting as they do elderly and vulnerable people in their own homes. Bogus officials may be smartly dressed and claim to be from organisations like water companies but their real aim is to talk their way in to the house, sometimes using false identification cards.
"Our advice is to check to see who the caller is first by using the spy hole if you have one or to look through a front window. Always put the chain on before you open the door and refuse entry if you are not satisfied. Switch on outside lights when it's dark to see who is there. Check any identity card closely. If in doubt call a neighbour, friend or the police. Genuine callers won't mind waiting or coming back on another day."
Anyone with information on any of the incidents mentioned here is urged to contact Avon and Somerset Police on 0845 456 7000. Alternatively you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via www.crimestoppers-uk.org. They never ask your name or trace your call.
Distraction Burglary - Crime Prevention Advice
• If you're not sure who is at your door, check the identity of the caller by calling the company they are claiming to be from. Use the telephone number listed in your local directory or provided independently by your service provider. Don't use any telephone numbers provided by the caller – they may be bogus.
• Alternatively, telephone a neighbour or friend nearby to come along and check out the caller before you open the door to them.
• Genuine callers won't mind either waiting while you verify their identity or making an appointment for a date when you can have someone with you.
• Many service providers provide password schemes and it can be helpful to sign up to these. When unannounced callers knock at your door they should know the password if they are genuine.
• Keep doors locked and windows secure at all times.
• Where possible, have a safety chain fitted and always attach the chain before opening the door to strangers.
• Ensure that if you do let somebody in to your home, that you close the door behind them – distraction burglars often work in teams, where one will distract you while others sneak in through an unlocked door.
• If somebody asks for your help – needs to make a telephone call, lost a ball in your garden, needs a drink or pen and paper, for example – don't invite them into your house. If you really want to offer help, make them wait outside whilst you fetch the drink/water etc, and whilst away from your door close and lock it. Or call a friend or neighbour to come and assist.
• Remember it's your doorstep, your decision.
