Should public buildings be lit up at night? Taunton Deane Borough Council are considering turning off  the external lights on their properties, such as the Market House in the town centre .

Appasrently there are a possible 43 buildings that could be switched off ,saving about £10,000 of annual expenses.

This seems to be a purely financial consideration rather than a bid to redcue the carbon footprint of Taunton but do you think it might be a security risk? How many of you are worried about more crime in areas where switiching of is a consideration?

While we're on the subject ,I wonder about all these endless bedding plants that get put down every year and have to be changed, that our taxes pay for. Under the circumstances and bearing in mind we are trying to encourage the bees, wouldn't it be better to get some perennial plants & herbs in some of these beds, like roundabouts.
Taunton in Bloom is wonderful but I am sure there are cuts backs that can be made without the loss of beauty, and what about more fruit trees in public places that can feed both the people and the birds and have valuable blossoms for the bees.

I think we need to take a wartime attitude to these cuts, in the forties when we had to be we were very frugal with the waste not want not attitude. there is no reason to have these building lit up at night like Christmas trees, yes it may be attractive for things like churches but we have to start thinking about uneccesary waste.
Some building have lights for security but often there are way too many, whether they be internal or external.Take out a few lightbulbs and put some dummies in or something.
