Taunton Priorswood Library
BIG BLOOMER.
Taunton's main library is supposed to stay with an automated system but probably with reduced hours, Priorswood library is now possibly under reprieve for a year to give the community time to figure something out and Bishops Lydeard's is set to close in September.
Protestors are calling for people to join
RED KNICKER DAY!
WEDNESDAY 2ND FEBRUARY at 9.30 for 10am, at COUNTY HALL, TAUNTON TA1 4DY
The county council cabinet will be discussing the proposals before they go to the vote at the full council on Wednesday February 16th.
There is also a community read-in planned at Priorswood Library, Taunton, on Friday 4th February between 10 and 11am.
You can read, go on the internet, tell stories and share your opinions with other people there.
Even of the cabinet decide to go with the new proposals which saves a few of the original 20 set for the chop,
Remaining libraries will have their opening hours reduced.
If you feel worried and angry about this – whether or not you are a regular library user, and whether or not your community will be directly affected - there is a call to join the ‘big bloomer’ campaign to get these outrageous proposals overturned.
The circulating email reads: "We, women (and men) of a certain age, have the power (and often a little more time) to influence decisions, and to bring this particular crass action to the attention of the local and national media.
"We think the action to target libraries is the biggest bloomer the County Council has ever made. We are preparing to take ours down (our bloomers, that is) to raise the mightiest stink we can. (Gents – wear them superman style!) and think of all the clever slogans you can apply or use on banners: ‘Don’t knick-our libraries’, ‘Pants to library closures’ …
So, get yours made (any old fabric will do), ready to wear and pull them down in front of the world’s press on Wednesday, 2nd February, when the Somerset County Council’s Cabinet will meet at County Hall to agree its library cuts.

PUBLIC Interest Lawyers , an international public law firm has launched High Court challenge over the closure of public libraries in Somerset and Gloucestershire. They have argued that the council’s did not consult properly with the public prior to their decision ,or pay proper attention to the needs of the vulnerable and that this is on conflict with a clear statutory obligation to provide a comprehensive and efficient library service. http://tinyurl.com/6bn8zbn

ReportI have heard there is a High Court action against the library closures happening because there is some kind of statutory obligation to provide them, does anyone know about this?
