Christmas lights in Taunton town centre

Taunton's Christmas lights were switched on as thousands watched in the town centre on Sunday evening. All day the streets were alive with market stalls in all directions and the shops were open for Christmas shopping while live bands played and carols were sung, quite a day. As darkness drew in, the masses gathered for the big switch on and were entertained by Taunton School choir and big band, and Taunton Academy who were both excellent despite being plagued by gremlins in the sound system which left us all being blasted by feedback and too much bass at times.

There was also street dancing by Elementz and fire juggling from Fuse before the Blackdown Samba Band led in Father Christmas,Mecca Becca from sponsors Mecca Bingo, the Mayor, Miss Taunton and the carnival princess.
The heliosphere was a definite hit and the crowd were so spellbound, many didn't even notice the fireworks had started over Debenhams.
It was freezing by the end and a long day for everyone but apart from the sound, went well thanks to the hard work of the TauntonTown Centre Company.

I really enjoyed switch on this year and what a magical attraction the heliosphere provided. Always a bit of a joke when the lights come on, but the logistics of Taunton do make it tricky to provide a safe open space to view them. I look forward to driving out through East Reach and seeing them then. A great family evening and for Free.
Thankyou Taunton Town Centre Company.

ReportIt was a real disappointment to be asked to come to this years event and then to have a phone call of cancellation. I know from last years celebration that having the Town Crier added a lot but sadly my efforts to be adopted as Tauntons Town Crier (at zero cost) have all been in vain. I love taunton and I do hope to be asked into the town on occasions and my sincere thanks go to all those who have supported my efforts.

ReportI must admit, when they pushed the plunger and the Christmas tree lit up, a little boy next to me said "is that it?" but that was before the heliosphere performance. Some of the crowd were already starting to disperse because there was a bit of a pause and it was such a big build up to the switch on.
