With all this talk about the health Service at the moment I just wanted to say that my experiences of Taunton hospital have always been good. I have been an inpatient and an out -patients in several different departments over the last 30 years, as well as visiting relatives in different wards. The staff have always been pleasant and respectful and very understanding when I was scared. They treated my elderly mother with care and at no time was her dignity compromised. There have been many improvements and they are adding and revising all the time. I am in the unique position of having had the same surgery there 15 years apart and saw the distinct change to being more involved in my own after care, control of my pain medicine, allowed to get up in the night and go to the day room if I couldn't sleep and getting in and out of bed when I wanted to. Yes there were aspects of the old 'Matron' days that were good but there was a lot of patient bullying in the old regimes that people choose to forget. Matrons are there now, you just don't notice them in the same way because they are not the fire breathing dragons they once were and everything is on a more equal footing. As for the NHS ,having lived in the USA for a while, heaven forbid we ever lose our health service!!
